Video Surveillance and Access Control in Clinical Settings

While most pharmacy chains and mainstream retailers which feature pharmacies tend to handle their security internally, individual physician (or other clinician) offices are often left surprisingly vulnerable to not just outside attack, but to internal theft among staff and even from patients.

Most medical offices have one or more supply closets or other locations which house samples of various medications, and these storage locations can be the target of a certain kind of theft “through attrition”. By this I mean to say that because the theft is likely internal, it tends to happen over longer periods of time, with not too much of the medication going missing at any given time, yet still causing loss in inventory and even potentially creating an opening for lawsuits.

Many clinical facilities and locally owned pharmacies do have at least a minimum of video surveillance, but surprisingly are lacking in access control. The ability to know who is accessing your pharmaceuticals and at what time is crucial in protecting against all of these threats.

Through the use of a key fob, biometric scan, or key card based access control system, you can know the “who and when” of any missing medications or supplies. Biometric or card based access control is a fit for dental offices as well, as these facilities tend to both have a more open floor plan as well as an almost guaranteed on-site stock of abusable anesthetics.

With the addition of an access control component to your facility, there will no longer be any question as to the location of “misplaced” supplies. It is even possible to assign different levels of clearance or vary access by time of day and particular personnel in question.

Security Technology of South Texas is happy to offer custom access control and surveillance solutions to the clinical and pharmaceutical markets, designed either turn-key and from the ground up, or integrated into an already existing series of cameras.
